Syllabus and Rules
Solo Classes will be divided into Ages 5-8, 9-11, 12-14 and 15-18
Duets/Duologues and Groups will be divided into Ages 5-11 and 12-18
STF Championship will be divided into Ages 5-11 and 12-18. Please see
below for details of each category and the costs involved.

We are thrilled to offer a FREE Championship class to any SOLO Competitor who scores 88 and higher in the 5-8 and 9-11 classes and any SOLO Competitor who scores 90 and higher in the 12-14 and 15-18 classes. These classes will be scheduled at the end of Saturday, more details can be found below.
Solo Acting- £9.50
Time Limit
4 Minutes
Competitors to perform, from memory, a monologue either from a story, play, film or stand alone piece.
(Monologues from boards such as LAMDA are perfectly acceptable)
A short introduction of up to 30 seconds may be spoken prior to the monologue. This 30 seconds will not be included in the time limit
Simple costumes and handheld props are allowed.

Solo Poetry-£9.50
Competitors to perform, from memory, any poem.

Competitors to perform, from memory a piece of prose

Solo Shakespeare-£9.50
Competitors to perform, from memory, a monologue from any Shakespeare play
A short introduction of up to 30 seconds may be spoken prior to the monologue. This 30 seconds will not be included in the time limit

Solo Public Speaking-£9.50
Competitors to speak about a subject of their own choice.
A short introduction of up to 30 seconds may be spoken prior to the monologue. This 30 seconds will not be included in the time limit

Solo Sightreading-£9.50
Competitors will read at sight a passage provided by the adjudicator.

Solo Musical Theatre-£9.50
Competitors to perform a song, from memory, from any Musical, Film Musical or Cabaret Song.
Competitors are expected to inhabit the character and perform the song within its original context or within a devised context. A short section of dialogue within the song or leading into the song is permitted.
A short introduction of up to 30 seconds may be spoken prior to the monologue. This 30 seconds will not be included in the time limit
Simple costumes and hand held props may be used

Solo Improvisation-£9.50
Spontaneous Improvisation to a theme given by the Adjudicator. Competitors will be given the theme one minute before they perform
At 3 minutes the adjudicator will ring a bell as a signal to the performers to bring their piece to a close.

Group Improvisation- £5 (Per person) To be entered by the Teacher. Please email us on office@southerntheatrefestival.co.uk
Spontaneous Improvisation to a theme given by the Adjudicator. Competitors will be given the theme one minute before they perform.
At 5 minutes the adjudicator will ring a bell as a signal to the performers to bring their piece to a close.

Southern Theatre Festival Junior Champion
Competitors scoring 88 marks and above will qualify for the prestigious STF Championship.
Competitors must perform 2 of the following pieces.
A Monologue, A Classical monologue, A Poem, A Piece of Prose, A speech of their own choice (Public Speaking) or A song from a Musical, Film Musical or Cabaret Song
(2 monologues may be performed but they must be contrasting in character)
Time limits of individual classes must be adhered to.
Competitors must be from the Solo aged 5-8 and 9-11 catergories

Southern Theatre Festival Senior Champion
Competitors scoring 90 marks and above will qualify for the prestigious STF Championship.
Competitors must perform 2 of the following pieces.
A monologue, A Classical monologue, A Poem, A Piece of Prose, A speech of their own choice (Public Speaking) or A song from a Musical, Film Musical or Cabaret song.
(2 monologues may be performed but they must be contrasting in character)
Time limits of individual classes must be adhered to.
Competitors must be from the Solo aged 12-14 and 15-18 catergories.
Southern Theatre Festival Rules
Entries
● A Performer may enter only once in any solo class and may not perform in any duologue or group class more than twice.
● If there are a large number of entries for a particular age category we may split the category into more concise age brackets.
How to enter -
● All entries must be made online via our online Google form.
● Entries Close - Monday 20th December 2024. Any entries made after this date will not be accepted. Entries may close sooner if we reach capacity
Age Limit -
● Ages are taken from the 1st September 2024
● Age for Duologues/Groups, the age of the eldest competitor determines class entered.
Entry Fees -
● Solo’s - £9.50 Duologues - Groups - £5 per person
Adjudication -
● The adjudicators decision is final
● No person, other than a steward, is allowed to communicate with an adjudicator during classes
On arrival at Venue
● Performers must check into the competitors’ table and hand in any texts with them for adjudication at least 30 mins before the class time. They must be typed and include the Performers Name and Class Title
● Performers must perform in the order in which they appear in the programme.
Photography -
● Taking Photos during performances or Recording performances is strictly forbidden (this includes adjudication). Performers will be disqualified if this occurs.
Costumes and Props -
● Simple costumes are allowed
● Handheld Props are allowed. A table, chairs and stage blocks will be available for performers to use in all categories.
Time Limits
Time limits must be adhered to. If a performer's piece is longer than the time limit for that particular class then only the performance within the time limit will be marked.
Music
All music for Musical Theatre classes must be emailed to office@southerntheatrefestival.co.uk by January 20th 2025. Please ensure they are in a MP3 format. A member of the festival team will play the music, if dialogue is used within the piece please email full script with the music. Please bring a backup CD as well.
Timetable
The running order will be available on the website approximately one month before the festival. Programmes will be available to buy on the day of the festival.
Awards and marking
● Each competitor will receive a report sheet and certificate. Which will be available for collection after each class
● Medals will be awarded to Solo and Duologue entries who place1st, 2nd and 3rd. Additional medals and medals for Groups will be available to buy
Certificates and Marks will be awarded as follows:
Fair 75-77 A performance limited in its communication.
Moderate 78-80 A performance showing development of technique and or communication. Merit 81-83 A capable performance showing some artistic appreciation and or technical ability.
Commended 84-86 A Convincing performance technically and artistically.
Distinction 87 - 89 An excellent performance both technically and artistically.
Honours 90+ An exceptional performance both technically and artistically.
Trophies
